10 Do's & Don'ts to Starting a Fashion Business

10 Do's & Don'ts of Starting a Fashion Business - laptops & smalltalk.jpg

01. DO PUT IN THE WORK

We're often asked the question, "how do I grow my business?" Truthfully, you can read every article on our blog, you can create marketing strategies to attract your target customer, you can partner with bloggers and influencers to help build your audience but none of that will matter (or work) if you aren't willing to put in the time and effort it takes to run a business. Being an entrepreneur is tough especially as a designer. You have to be willing to put in the work. There's just no way around it.

02. DON'T EXPECT SUCCESS OVER NIGHT

Very rarely do people start a business and become an overnight success story. We live in a world where instant gratification is the way of life but unfortunately, building a business doesn't work like that. As much as we all wish there were a magic button we could push to suddenly have it all, growing a business takes time. Even when it feels like you're getting nowhere, trust your journey, trust your progress and always keep moving forward.

03. DO COLLABORATE WITH OTHERS

We can honestly say that 100% of the success we've achieved has come from collaborating and working with others. Whether it was collaborating an event or grabbing a coffee to chat about the industry and share ideas, one of our biggest assets here at Laptops & Smalltalk has been the people in our network aka YOU!

04. DO ASK FOR WHAT YOU WANT

Don't be afraid to ask for what you want. Don't be afraid to ask for what you want. If you want to collaborate with someone on a project or want to invite someone from the press to your event, don't be afraid to ask. You'd be surprised at how many amazing things you can make happen simply from asking. Besides, the worse thing they can say is no and if they do say no... ask someone else!

05. DON'T TAKE IT PERSONAL

A. It's fashion.
B. It's business.
C. It's business fashion.

Some people in the fashion industry just aren't very nice. But that's true for many industries. Don't let people bully you into doing things or discourage you from your goals. Unfortunately, shady things will happen, it comes with the territory, but don't let it get to you. Surround yourself with positive, uplifting people who you can vent to when you're annoyed and who will motivate you when you feel discouraged.

06. DON'T MAKE EXCUSES ABOUT WHAT YOU DON'T KNOW AND GOOGLE IT

Don't let not knowing how to do something stop you from growing your business. Sometimes you won't have access to someone who can fix your website or have the funds to pay someone to edit your photos. In these situations figuring out how to edit your Shopify website or how to smooth skin in photoshop is extremely useful. You don't have to become an expert in these fields but it's always helpful to have some skills in different areas. The more you can do on your own, the less you have to depend on others to get things done.

07. DO CREATE PROCESSES AND SYSTEMS

The more processes, routines, and checklists you set in place for yourself, the easier it is to create a work-flow for your business and a life that works. Creating systems will save you time by giving you a step-by-step guide to follow so you don't have to reinvent the wheel every single time. It also helps keep you professional and on top of your business game. Systems are also vital when you want to bring on an employee or intern.

08. DO INVEST IN YOUR BUSINESS

Whether it's time or money, investing in your business is monumental. Invest money into a professional website and email address (no yourbusinessname@gmail.com). Invest time into creating a cohesive aesthetic for your Instagram feed. Invest in educating yourself about your craft and how to run your business. If you want your business to grow you have to invest in it.

09. DON'T BE AFRAID TO SAY NO

It's easy to get excited about all your ideas and want to do everything all at once especially when you're first starting out. Don't. Be strategic about the things you participate in and the things you say yes to. Doing everything is one of the quickest ways to burn out.

10. DO HAVE CONFIDENCE IN YOURSELF & YOUR BUSINESS

Having confidence in yourself and in your business is vital to growing. The law of attraction is a powerful thing. Simply put, the law of attraction means “like attracts like” meaning, the things we think about the most is what comes into our lives. Under this maxim, the more you focus on negative thoughts, the more negative experiences you bring into your life. Vice versa, the more you focus on the positive things you want for your business and life, the likelier you are to bring these things into existence. The saying, "fake it until you make it" is so true. Tell yourself over and over that you are capable until you believe it's true.
