Becoming an entrepreneur and starting a business is an exciting opportunity. There’s no greater feeling then being able to do what you love and live your passion on your own terms.

Although entrepreneurship can be an amazing feeling, it can also be totally nerve racking and scary to venture out on your own.

 ”What if I fail?”

”What if no one buys my designs?”

“There’s so much to do, where do I start?”

”Do I have what it takes to run a business?”

“What if I go broke trying to pursue my passion?”

”What if I’m not good enough? Smart enough? Talented enough?”

“Will my business idea work?”

If you've ever asked yourself any of these questions, you are not alone.

Fear and self-doubt are two totally normal and legitimate emotions that every entrepreneur feels at some point in their journey. There’s a lot of risk in putting yourself out there so it’s only natural to feel some uncertainty, however  the key is to manage these feelings and not allow them to stop you from moving forward. Easier said than done, right?

How do you overcome your fears and get started building the business of your dreams? Here are 5 tips to get you started.

One of the best ways to move past your fear of failure is to plan to succeed. Fear often comes from not knowing what lies ahead. The more you arm yourself with information and plan for success, the more you become confident in pushing through. When you have a well thought out plan that you feel confident, in it’s much easier to keep putting one foot in front of the other. You may be nervous and have doubts, but when you give yourself deadlines and a plan of action it’s easier to forget about your self doubt because you're too busy moving forward. Instead of thinking about the overall dream you can focus on the smaller tasks that will move you toward your ultimate goal.

Surround yourself with people who support and motivate you when you aren't feeling as confident. Find like-minded people  who you can trust and who can understand what you’re going through. Whether your family, friends, people you meet in networking organizations or virtual friends, having a support group of people who can be your cheerleader and  encourage you to continue with your path and celebrate all your successes, big and small is beyond helpful to overcoming your fear. Your network can also be your anchor when the going gets rough and give you advice and listen to you when fear and doubt start to set in.

The law of attraction is a powerful thing. Simply put, the law of attraction means “like attracts like” meaning, the thing we think about the most is what comes into our lives. Under this maxim, the more you focus on negative thoughts, the more negative experiences you bring into your life. Vice versa, the more you focus on the positive things you want for your business and life, the likelier you are to bring these things into existence. The saying, "fake it until you make it" is so true. Tell yourself over and over that you are capable until you believe it's true.

Sometimes the best way to overcome your fear is to just to dive in and take the plunge. Often times we can overthink a situation and allow our minds to run totally wild thinking the worse when in reality the situation is nothing like what we thought. Don’t allow yourself to talk yourself out of trying.

This is probably the most important point. Success takes time. It takes time to build a brand that everyone knows. It takes time to get noticed. For some, it may seem like it happened overnight, but you never know how long they've been working on their brand or how much behind-the-scenes work they put in. Don’t beat yourself up if you've been doing this for a while and still haven't peaked.

Did you finally launch your dream business? Make your first sale? Did you make more sales this year than last year? Did you create and stick to an editorial calendar for your blog? Did you grow your newsletter list? Get more followers on social media? Create a strategy that worked for you? Write it all down. Sometimes as entrepreneurs we tend to focus so intensely on the where we want to be and where we want to go that we don’t stop to acknowledge our victories. Take time to make a list and acknowledge ALL your successes, no matter how small and revisit this list when you need a confidence boost to see all that you’ve accomplished.

Entrepreneurship is no easy task but the reward is priceless when you’re able to do what you love and live your passion on your own terms. Yes, fear and self-doubt are two normal emotions that every entrepreneur feels at some point in their entrepreneurial journey, but don't allow those feelings to dictate your life and stop you from moving forward. You will never know what you are truly  capable of until you try.
